Important places in Shimoga Taluk

It is 16 Kms from Shimoga on Holehonnur, Channagiri Road, Rivers Tunga and Bhadra -Joins here. hence the name Koodali. As the rivers joins Tunga- Bhadra was born. It flows overwellemingly from here.Koodali is also a religious centre. It is also called as south Varanasi, Mahaprayaga and Rushyashrama, Brahmeswara, Narashima and Rameshwsra temples, and 600 years old mutt at shankaracharya is here inscriptions of Hoysala and Ikkeri Kings are found here.

GAJANUR
It is 10Kms. from Shimoga on Thirthahalli Road.A Dam is constructed across the river Tunga.It is 580'in width and 60'in height. Upper Tungaproject has an inspection Bungalow, reservation authority The executive engineer, Upper Tunga Projects Shimoga, Telephone No 08182-22972.
MandagaddeIt is 32 Kms. from Shimoga on Thirthahalli Road.It is a Bird Sanctuary on Tunga River.Birds like Lgret, Carmorent Darter, Snake Bird arefound. The season starts during May and November.

Shivappanaika Palace/Museum
It located in the middle of Shimoga City, on the banks ofTunga river. The palace is built by Keladi Rule ShivappaNayaka during 16th century. The palace is entirely built of rose wood. State department of Archeology is maintaining the museum, which has a collection of stone carvings and antiquities of the Keladi period. A rest house is available for the tourist. Sacred Heart Church
The church is built in the middle of Shimoga city on B.H road .The architecture of the church is in Roman graphic style. The church is said to be the 2nd largest church in India .The church is about 18000 square feet in area with a big prayer hall. Which has the capacity of 5000 peoples. Elephant Camp (Shakrebyle)Elephant t camp is 13 Kms. from Shimoga on Thirthahalli Road, located on the banks of the Tunga reservoir, everyday morning all the elephantstake their bath and proceed to near by forest for theirrounds after 10 A.M Tourist should reach this spotbefore 9 A.m. City buses are available at 7.30, 8.30 and 10 A.M.

Tiger / Lion Safari
This Safari is located at Tavarekopoa 10 Kms away from Shimoga in B.H road (N.H 206),Sagar route. Forest department has set-up the Shettihalli Lion Safari, where we can see some Tigers,Lions,Chita,Bear,Deer,Birds etc Children recreation facilities are available and it will be opening at about 9 A.M to 5 P.M everyday except Tuesday that is holiday. Almost all buses to Sagar will stop here.
Waterfalls

JOG FALLS




Jog Falls are magnificent world famous water falls is situated at a distance of 104 Kms. from Shimoga via Sagar and Talaguppa. This is also called Sharavathi falls. The river Sharavathi takes a spectacular leap from a height of 292mts (900feet) in 4 distinct falls, Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket, to form the highest waterfalls in India.

The best time to visit these falls are soon after monsoon during July-August. Located amidst verdant forests, these falls are a sheer joy to watch. They keep the viewer captivated with a sort of magnetic attraction displayed by the huge amounts of water that cascades down the falls every minute.


Accommodation facilities are available at Sagar and nearby Kargal. A good number of Govt lodges, guest houses and youth hostels are also available for the intrepid traveller. Bus facilities are very good and frequent trips are there to Sagar and Shimoga. The nearest railhead is Talguppa, which is linked to Shimoga, the district headquarters.Accommodation:

HISTORY

The Kadambas, Gangas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Vijayanagara emperors ruled over this region.Keladi Nayakas were the most important rulers among the ruling families, which held high the torch of Hindu culture. During Vijayanagara period, Keladi rulers ruled as sub-ordinates of the Vijayanagara emperors and later as independent rulers.

The earliest time one can refer to this region is during the 3rd century when the Mauryas were the dominant force in this part. Satavahanas were to come to stay later for some time.
ORIGIN: The name Shimoga refers to Lord Shiva ( Shiva Mukha' - Face of shiva , 'Shivana Mogu' - Nose of shiva, 'Shivana Moge' - Bud of flowers for Shiva ).

There is a popular legend is that Shimoga had the ashram of the famous sage 'Durvasa' who was noted for his temper. The story here relates to the incident were he used to keep on the oven a pot boiling with sweet herbs in water. One day, some cowboys who saw it, tasted the beverage out of curiosity and called the place 'Sihi - Moge' [Sweet Pot] , which later changed as Shimoga.

Three iron age megalithic sites, with different megaliths, have also been found in the district, at Nilaskal in Hosanagar taluk and Shimoga, which have menhirs, and at Arehalli in Thirthahalli taluk, which has port-holed burial chambers.
Shimoga is a colorful district with attractive landscape, waterfalls , green forests ,river valley , bountiful fields with areca palms and paddy fields. Situated in the center of Karnataka state. It has about 3.28 lakh hectares of forest with sandalwood , teak and other valuable trees. Forest occupies about 60% of the total land area with large forests . The rivers and water falls in the district are world famous. Tunga, Bhadra,Sharavathi, Varada and Kumudvathi rivers has made this district a rice bowl in the state. There are many places of Architectural splendor in the district. The district is known for its world famous tourist spots and also equally for its areca markets
