HISTORY

The Kadambas, Gangas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Vijayanagara emperors ruled over this region.Keladi Nayakas were the most important rulers among the ruling families, which held high the torch of Hindu culture. During Vijayanagara period, Keladi rulers ruled as sub-ordinates of the Vijayanagara emperors and later as independent rulers.

The earliest time one can refer to this region is during the 3rd century when the Mauryas were the dominant force in this part. Satavahanas were to come to stay later for some time.
ORIGIN: The name Shimoga refers to Lord Shiva ( Shiva Mukha' - Face of shiva , 'Shivana Mogu' - Nose of shiva, 'Shivana Moge' - Bud of flowers for Shiva ).

There is a popular legend is that Shimoga had the ashram of the famous sage 'Durvasa' who was noted for his temper. The story here relates to the incident were he used to keep on the oven a pot boiling with sweet herbs in water. One day, some cowboys who saw it, tasted the beverage out of curiosity and called the place 'Sihi - Moge' [Sweet Pot] , which later changed as Shimoga.

Three iron age megalithic sites, with different megaliths, have also been found in the district, at Nilaskal in Hosanagar taluk and Shimoga, which have menhirs, and at Arehalli in Thirthahalli taluk, which has port-holed burial chambers.
